Seminal 1999 lesbian movie But I’m a Cheerleader might be about to achieve the seemingly impossible: becoming more brilliantly campy than ever. Director Jamie Babbit, who helmed the original funny-yet-poignant story of two teenage lesbians (Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall) enrolled in a sexual orientation-altering boot camp, has voiced her desire to turn the flick into a full-blown Broadway musical.

“I would love to direct a full blown musical. Maybe sometime soon,” Babbit recently told Same Same. “They did a musical version of But I’m a Cheerleader in London with the Kinky Boots director. If they find investors I know they want to mount it as a musical on Broadway!”

Babbit recently reconnected with Lyonne to film the LGBT-tinged Addicted to Fresno, which sees the actress romantically linked to fellow deadpan comedy queen Aubrey Plaza. The director didn’t let on whether she’d aim to reunite Lyonne and DuVall for the remake of But I’m a Cheerleader, but judging by Lyonne’s Instagram, doing so would not be at all a futile mission. Things we can almost definitely expect to see and hear: PG-rated PDA, a candy-pop soundtrack, and affectionate Andre zingers such as “She’s just upset because the fish on her plate is the only kind she can eat.”
