“Goodnight everybody…” whispers Daedelus as he opens his sublime sleep-time i-D mix. Currently making his way through Europe, the LA producer and DJ has put his typically eclectic tastes to work on a short but sweet sonic adventure that’ll take you from the waking world into a series of dreams and nightmares. So if, like us, the week is taking its toll on your weary soul, go home early tonight and climb into bed with Daedelus. Drift away and sleep tight.
Everybody’s life needs a soundtrack. Here are the tunes that keep Daedelus going:
The party’s still going strong, but you want to call it a night. What track do you pop on when everyone’s still raving and it’s time to go to sleep?
Ah, the come-down! I think when it’s just the bleary eyed zombies of an all-nighter, you must go with techno while winding down. Think Leed by Dntel or most Four Tet, but especially Rivers Become Oceans.
Where do you go when the record ends and the lights come on?
Personally after a long night I like to visit the morning coffee shop, where those just facing the day meet my sharp contrast. Espresso for both of us.
After a hectic tour schedule, you finally get home. What track do you put on to kick back and relax?
Lately all these new hip-hop mcs have my ears spinning. I keep returning to Tap Dance by Octave Minds featuring Chance the Rapper, but I’m also always interested in the music that never quite makes the live show like Elza Soares’ Fechei a Porta – such a call to arms.
Do you ever fall asleep to music? What do you play?
When it’s not the loud sounds of the evening still ringing, I like the ambience of the mellower Silver Mount Zion and Tim Hecker. His Dungeoneering in particular.
Who is the last person you kissed goodnight?
Something about kissing and telling I recall. Or did I?
You’ve caught each other’s eye across a crowded dancefloor. What do you play to ensure things move from the box to the bedroom?
With eyes affixed (so to avoid any confusion) let’s discard the victorian attire with the very direct sounds of Dj Sliink Vibrate with it’s bed springs abounding, or maybe Fuck U All The Time (Shlohmo remix) by Jeremih, which is sex incarnate.
Sleep is always the hardest to come by when you need it the most. What track is guaranteed to bring on the shut eye after a heavy weekend?
I personally like unwinding to classic ballad Doo-wop Daddy’s Home by Shep and the Limelites or I Only have Eyes For You by The Flamingos.
What track makes you want to cuddle up to the one you love?
Maybe this sounds weird but Euphoria by Mono-poly is perfect for just this.
What song gets you out of bed in the morning?
Most Hundson Mohawke, but more grandly, Lost (HeavyxMellow remix) by Lido sets the day on course.
What is the most relaxing track/mix/playlist in your collection?
Surprisingly my Lovers Juke playlist is all smooth 160+ bpm and 34 songs and counting. It’s a burgeoning genre I believe.
And what do you like to do when listening to it?
It sends me into tiny dances.
Finish the sentence, the music sounds better with…
Mestanding fully awake.
