The good news just keeps on rolling in for fans of the cult small town murder mystery (with damn fine coffee) Twin Peaks. As the Giant once said, “I will tell you three things. If I tell them to you and they come true, then will you believe me?”
1. There will be 18 new episodes
When David Lynch returned to the project after joining initially and then quitting – because there wasn’t enough budget being offered to do the drama justice, it was announced by Showtime president David Nevins that there would be more than the 9 originally commissioned episodes. Now it has been revealed that the episode tally has doubled to 18. Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer / Maddy Ferguson) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) confirmed the news at horror convention Crypticon in Seattle at the weekend. Lee will return, despite both of her characters, cousins Laura and Maddy, being murdered in the original series.
2. The original composer is on board
Angelo Badalamenti, who composed the soundtrack for the original series, as well as Lynch films Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, will return for the new, extended Twin Peaks run. Badalamenti’s eerie soundscapes drew viewers into the Double R Diner, The Great Northern Hotel, One Eyed Jack’s casino and the owl-occupied woods, and he’s sure to concoct some chilling new aural trips for whatever Lynch has dreamed up 25 years later.
3. The original Double R Diner will be resurrected
Home to damn fine cups of coffee and warm slices of homemade cherry pie, the original Double R Diner will return. The real life Twede’s Cafe in North Bend burnt down in 2000, but it is set to be restored and used for filming in the new episodes. Log Lady Margaret Lanterman (Catherine E. Coulson) self confirmed that she will be returning, so we can expect some wood-based wisdom with our hot drinks and milkshakes.
