Previously Melbourne-based producer DEER, AKA Tom Hitchcock, has been known for bringing the bangers. But with his latest track All Alone he’s teamed up with multi-hatted Melbourne artist Martin King (Oscar & Martin, The Harpoons) to lends the song some soulful, RnB vibes. The video, premiering today on i-D, finds a very photogenic couple in the first split-seconds of a possible relationship. In that moment, we’re escorted through all the romance, love, laughter, heartache, abandonment, and drama that could await them if they walk across the dance floor and say hello. Think of it as a case-study of every time you had eye-sex with a stranger across the room.
In honour of almost-relationships, i-D Called up Tom to see what he’s been up to, and practice some first date questions.
Hey Tom, so you’ve teamed up with Martin for All Alone. How did that collaboration come about?
I’d seen Martin play a solo show in Melbourne, and the next day I shot him a message on Facebook asking if he was keen to do something together. He was, so I sent him the beat for All Alone, which I had written with my friend David early last year. He sent back the vocals and that was it. I had the track almost done for ages – I’m super pedantic with finishing tracks so it went through a few edits before the project was done. I hadn’t actually properly met him until after the track was complete, so it was cool when we finally met!
Cool, like music pen pals. So this weekend you’re heading to the Paradise Music Festival to perform. Other than you, obviously, who do you recommend people check out?
Strict Face for sure. I met him the other day when I played an Adelaide show with UV Boi, such a cool dude. Of course The Harpoons, I haven’t actually seen them play live before so that will be cool. And Null is playing after me and has a wicked live set so I’ll shout him out.
Who is your favourite local act at the moment?
Strict Face.
Do you have a personal theme song?
At the moment, Young Thug, Love Me
What about a superhero power?
To make people dance.
