Dev Hynes has hardly dropped off the radar since releasing his brilliant second album Cupid Deluxe almost three years ago. If anything, he’s been more prolific than most artists who release a new album every 12 months, channeling his unbridled creativity and fine-tuned production skills into projects with Connan Mockasin, David Byrne, Adam Bainbridge, Eckhaus Latta, and even the legendary Grace Jones. Still, a brand new album under his moniker Blood Orange is a pretty BFD. So is the Deana Lawson-lensed album art he unveiled this morning, along with a promise that Freetown Sound “is coming VERY soon.”
“My 3rd BLOOD ORANGE album FREETOWN SOUND is coming VERY soon,” Dev wrote alongside the vivid, intimate image of a young couple embracing in front of a subtle poster of Michael Jackson — who has frequently inspired Dev’s own sound and style. “This is the Cover by the incredible Deana Lawson. See you this weekend at Roots Picnic.” Dev takes the stage in Philadelphia tomorrow for the 9th Annual Roots Picnic, where he’ll hopefully debut a few new tracks. What might they sound like? “This is a very layered and very deep record for me,” he said earlier this year. “There’s a lot of meaning behind all of the choices I’ve made for this one… “It’s definitely very personal, but in doing that I think it’s probably the most relatable thing I’ve ever done.”
