dj moxie’s on loop and shining a light on new artists

We speak to the DJ as she releases her second compilation, and announces new label and club night.

Last year DJ Moxie released her first compilation featuring tracks from Mella Dee, Kowton and Ikonika as well as lesser known names like SCNTST and DEAMONDS. Continuing to shine a light on newer artists, Moxie Presents Vol. 2 shares tracks from Giganta, Eli Escobar and Tee Mango as well as tracks from known hitters Lone, Drum Talk and Medlar. The tracks venture from straight up punchy house jams from Medlar, Eli Escobar and Drumtalk through to analogue acid vibes from Lord Tusk.

Adding to her seemingly non-stop schedule, Moxie tells i-D of her new club night and label On Loop which kicks off this March in London at Oval Space’s new venue, The Pickle Factory with Tom Trago and The Maghreban and then heads up to Manchester’s Soup Kitchen with Shanti Celeste and Jon K for the second leg in April. i-D found out a little more about what the DJ, radio presenter and tastemaker has been up to as we share Moxie Presents Vol.2 below.

Hey Moxie! Where abouts in the world are you now?
Currently wrapped up warm in my North London home and trying to avoid going out to what feels like a winter episode of Game Of Thrones.

What have you been up to recently?
I’ve been working away on a few projects one being my new compilation Moxie Presents Vol. 2 and the other which is my new club night and label called On Loop. Alongside that hosting my NTS radio show and also just got back from hosting a special one off NTS broadcast over in Florence, which was beautiful. I ended up staying out there for a few days and got to see the first ever Gucci shop which has now been turned into museum and I think it’s fair to say their gift shop is a very dangerous place indeed.

How did you go about picking the tracks for the second compilation, was the selection process difficult?
I’ve been working on this for a while now and so happy to see it finally coming out! I was going back and forth with the artists making sure it was right but once we got there everything fell into place. There was a point when I had to put everything on hold due to having such a busy summer with festivals but once that had calmed down I had time to fully focus on signing everything off.

You’ve got some lesser known producers on the compilation like Lord Tusk and Giganta, how did you come across these guys?
I’ve been a fan of both of these producers for a while. Lord Tusk lives near me in London and sometimes we just hang out and listen to records and he is an all round absolute dude and one of my favourite UK producers. He’s also previously released material on Funkineven’s label Apron records so if you’re into his stuff I’d definitely recommend checking that out. Giganta I’ve not been able to meet in person yet as she lives in Athens but I first came across her via Actress’s WerkDiscs label, and she was a previous RBMA participant, she also did a mix for my NTS show a few years back which was dope and we’ve stayed in touch ever since.

What tracks resonate with you the most?
Ahh it would be too hard to choose as I love all the tracks for different reasons. Each producer brings something totally different to the table and for me that’s what I loved most about working on this project as it gave me the opportunity to share some of the different styles of music I’m into and really push the producers I believe in.

Describe the compilation in three words?
Jisty, warm, vibes.

What else have you got up your sleeve you can tell us about?
I’ve got my new club night On Loop launching in March which I’m so excited about as I’ve been working on this since last summer tracking down venues to host the night in. We’re going to be taking it to different cities around the UK and also in France and the first one kicks off March 19th at the Pickle Factory in London with Tom Trago and The Maghreban joining me.

Then for April we move to Manchester’s Soup Kitchen with Shanti Celeste and Jon K who are also two amazing selectors. I’ve always wanted to throw my own party and can’t wait to get on the road with this! And then of course the label On Loop which we’ll be kicking off with some vinyl samplers from the compilation later in the year so keep your eyes peeled for that..

Where can we catch you playing next?
On Friday you can catch me spinning in Exeter for the night ‘Our House’ and then on the Saturday i’ll be making my way to Antigel Festival in Switzerland to play alongside Brodinski and BokBok which will be vibes!
