Today is a good day. The sun is shining intermittently (in London, at least), it’s almost the weekend and there’s plenty of nice new music to soundtrack your grossly disproportionate hangover with. Remember Florida artist Kilo Kish? Of course you do! Her 2016 album Reflections in Real Time was totally brilliant and now she’s back out of the blue with an EP called Mothe, which, according to the internet, is Old Prussian for mother. Its opening track San Pedro sits on today’s playlist alongside Yves Tumor’s beautiful but not feline-friendly new track Licking an Orchid, our favourite from his new Safe in the Hands of Love album.
But it’s Queens singer Duendita who opens the BEST NEW MUSIC PLAYLIST this week with her heavenly single, Magdalena and a promise that there’s a debut EP to come soonish. Somebody is listening to our prayers after all. Talking of which, MØ is still teasing out her long-awaited second album Forever Neverland and bouncy party tune with bonus panpipe Way Down is the latest addition. MØ describes it as “a semi-apocalyptic song about feeling scared and depressed about world politics these days. All information — both true and fake — just seems so chaotic and frightening that sometimes you want escape it for a moment and go ‘get drunk with your baby’ in the hopes of waking up reset and able.” Same.
Off to Japan now, where funky psych-rock band Tempalay have released a wild single called SONIC WAVE. They do good merch too, it turns out. Then over to Seoul for Keith Ape’s trappy and bilingual new collaboration with US rapper Wifisfuneral, Ninja Turtle. There’s also an emotional offering from Waxahatchee, some Skate Kitchen score by Clairo, and the distinctly flutey Flair by A2, Octavian, Yxng Bane and Suspect. Plus new stuff from Leikeli47, L Devine, Gengahr, Ryan Hemsworth, Ezra Collective, slowthai, Varnrable, Ashnikko and more. You’re welcome!
