An art school joke, the future of pop music, or the apocalypse in crop tops?

Singles from PC Music’s glittery stable of nuclear-grade-candy pop stars have been released today on label sampler, PC Music Volume 1. Featuring tracks from label founder A. G. Cook, as well as easyFun, GFOTY (Girlfriend Of The Year) and Hannah Diamond, the sampler is an acid-sharp statement of intent: PC Music are after your digital dance pop ❤.

    A. G. Cook launched the label in 2013 in order to bring friends who were working on music of similar styles under one umbrella. That style is born of a generation who grew up in the late 90s and 00s, surrounded by shiny, manufactured pop, product placement and video game music on repeat for hours. The resulting sound is chipmunk-y, retro-futuristic euro dance with sickly sweet female vocals, singing about fake fashion and puppy love.

The ADHD sound and style of PC Music has led many indignant spectators and commentators to conclude that it’s all an elaborate, cynical joke by post-everything art school kids, and the studied vacuousness of artists does nothing to dispel this. When Radio 1 recently asked GFOTY what her influences are, she sweetly answered, “I’m kind of my own influence, if you know what I mean. I mean, like, me and boys and Selfridges, and that’s about it.”

Seriously ridiculous, or ridiculously serious, PC Music have set their sights on pop-world domination. And they’re on their way; the label’s recent showcase at SXSW knocked the industry sideways, and full length albums are expected from both GFOTY and Hannah Diamond later this year.
