Unarmed Eric Garner’s July 2014 death at the hands of white New York Police officer Daniel Pantaleo was ruled a “homicide” by New York City Medical Examiner’s Office last year. As Pantaleo wrapped his arms around Garner’s neck, forcing his head into the concrete ground, Garner shouted “I can’t breathe!” which became a rallying cry at protests sparked by the event. Pantaleo was not charged and remains an employee of the NYPD, now performing desk duty.
Today, the New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer issued a press release stating Eric’s family had reached a settlement agreement with the City after filing a claim in October 2014. Notably, “the City has not admitted liability,” but Eric’s family will receive US $5.9 million.
