We asked a handful of our favourite photographers to look back at 2019 and remember it through the photographs they took. From i-D contributions to personal pictures of friends, family and strangers on the street, this is Evan Browning: My Year in Photos.
New Yorker Evan Browning got into photography back in 2008. After graduating from university, he began documenting his travels around South America. These days he works on a number of different projects, shooting for magazines like L’Officiel Hommes Paris, Office and Jalouse, and collaborating with brands like Adidas, Burberry and Bode. Earlier this year Evan shot a portfolio of New York’s most exciting emerging designers, stylists, photographers and creatives for i-D. The work he’s most excited about from 2019 is a fashion-documentary project in Honduras he’s been shooting with a friend over the last year. “We’ve been back and forth several times, shooting in small Garifuna villages along the coast,” he says.
January
I began the year going through the film from a few weeks earlier. This is part of something I’ve been working on for just over a year with my friend, Roberto. We’ve been shooting a project about Garifuna people in Honduras. Here’s an image of Ceci, who we met in the village of Sambo Creek.
February
Portrait of Matt Holmes for i-D.
March
I was in Alabama shooting a separate project when I randomly met Joe. He was teaching kids to ride horses just to the right of me and let me take his photo.
April
Outtake of Buddy. We wanted the shoot to be a throwback to early 90s rap artist shoots, like what Mike Miller did with Eazy-E and what Dana Lixenberg did with Biggie.
May
Guzman and Mexi Mike’s grillz.
June
Portrait of Katherine, the first ever Garifuna beauty queen in Honduras.
July
Roberto on a boat.
August
Lewis Hamilton.
September
Portrait of Morocco. This kid moves so well in front of the camera but this static shot was my favourite.
October
I shot Anna of the North at Candy Studio in Chinatown. She came up the narrow four story climb with two massive boxes of merch she was going to sell at her show that night. Respect.
November
This is a polaroid of Zabriskie Point taken during a road trip through Death Valley with some friends.
December
This is what my father’s garden looked like in May or June. It’s lush and colourful this time of year, my nephew calls it “Grandpa’s rainbow garden.” He’s been working on it for almost thirty years. This time of year he prepares for spring, bringing certain plants indoors, protecting them from frost.
