Mad that terrestrial TV still exists, isn’t it? Like, there are things on there at scheduled times, there’s a world outside of streaming and Instagram vloggers destroying bars of soap for ASMR hits and kids singing Shrek over news broadcasts on TikTok. Mad. Anyway the BAFTAs were last night, and chances are you missed watching the actual ceremony, so here’s the rundown of the best bits that will eventually resurface as easily digestible clips on Twitter anyway.
Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz support gay rights
Remember that iconic poster someone made of Jennifer Lawrence proclaiming “gay rights!” that changed the face of the LGBT movement? You know the one. Anyway it’s been eclipsed by a video clip of The Favourite stars Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz bringing the same energy to the BAFTAs red carpet last night.
Twitter user @lgbtdisney saw her opportunity and she took it, asking both actresses to say “gay rights” into the camera as they passed her on their way to the awards ceremony. The result is this cinematic masterpiece, deserving of its own BAFTA.
It’s what we deserve.
Host Joanna Lumley made a very awkward KKK joke
The ceremony got off to an awkward start when host Joanna Lumley used her opening monologue to crack an ill-advised Ku Klux Klan joke. “I’m surprised Blackkklansman did so well at the Klan Film Festival,” said Joanna Lumley, a white woman.
Crickets.
People were — quite literally — falling for Timothée Chalamet
Tough life for Timothée Chalamet, heartthrob extraordinaire. Not only do his interviews and fashion choices regularly send the internet into a en-masse frenzy, now he literally has people falling at his feet. While posing for photographers and looking very dapper in an embossed Haider Ackermann suit on the red carpet, some poor unnamed publicist stumbled while trying to usher him into place. Timothée, obviously, immediately rushed to help her.
Expressing a fleeting moment of vague compassion towards a person who’s fallen over? We stan a chivalrous king.
Letitia Wright used her acceptance speech to open up about depression
Last night was a great one for Black Panther star Letitia Wright, who picked up the award for BAFTA Rising Star. She used the platform to reveal her battle with depression and encourage young people struggling with their own mental health not to give up hope. “A few years ago I saw myself in a deep state of depression and I literally wanted to quit acting,” Letitia told the audience. The actress attributed her success and ability to recover in part to her deep faith. “This wasn’t an overnight thing, this wasn’t a click of the finger success, and I’m still a work in progress.
“I want to encourage young people,” the star went on. “Just let your light shine.”
A very excited Richard E Grant danced around in his Louboutins
These is red bottoms, these is bloody shoes.
