During a period where Hollywood is being called out for its misogyny (see Anna Kendrick, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan and Kristen Stewart’s recent comments), it’s a relief to see that one of its leading men, British actor Tom Hardy, is inherently feminist. At a press conference for Mad Max: Fury Road, Toronto Star movie critic Peter Howell asked Hardy, “As you were reading the script, did you ever think, ‘Why are all these women in here? I thought this was supposed to be a man’s movie?'” to which Hardy’s instinctive response was, “No, not for one minute. I mean, that’s kind of obvious.” Teamed with that, there was a bemused, pissed-off and practically pitying look from the actor. In most quarters, the reincarnation of Mad Max has won plaudits for its feminist bent.
