Marian Cramer presents Richard Lockett’s Follow the Trail in her beautiful home gallery in Amsterdam, where previous London artists including Prem Sahib, Richard Healy and Adham Faramawy have all shown. Lockett’s work includes drawing, sculpture and installation, dealing with themes of the domestic, gender and memory. One of the two sculptures lining the entrance, Ten To.., times your entrance, winking at you behind a white piquant fan, a nod to another time, the future or the past all in one. The second, Back to the Future, looks out on the corridor as if it belonged on the head of a Chinese Empress Dowager, adorned with black synthetic threads trailing from the main symmetrical body. Or could it be the relic of an after-party, where an exuberant queen poses under a veil thrown on top of a turban, to the fading thump of pop and techno? I couldn’t tell.

Lockett’s work morphs between worlds, referencing the past yet somehow, by magic, embodying the now. The installations invite the viewer to cast a different eye on the familiar: a pair of trousers hang on the wall, whilst a projection of two rectangles suggestively open and close behind it and a series of images creep up the wall behind the opening and closing of white blinds. The objects exist between worlds: the masculine and feminine, the past and the future, desire and aversion. Abstract drawings complete the show where multiple forms appear in conversation with each other between the space of the paper. Lockett is yet another emerging London based artist who feels honest and authentic and modern. His work reflects a world where young people are defying labels and creating multiple identities where categories of masculine and feminine or queer seem dated and constricting. It also references the past, creating a sense of timelessness – a word savoured for very few new artists.

Follow The Trail runs until 20th November mariancramer.com
