Last week was Britney Spears’s birthday, and her friend, collaborator, and fellow pop idol Madonna celebrated her in a very Madonna way. During a charity performance for Raising Malawi at Art Basel Miami Beach, the legend covered Brit’s 2003 hit “Toxic” — with a few changes. Moving away from the original’s sweaty-snake-orgy origins, she took a tears of a clown approach. Donning a tiny hat, striped leggings, and a oversized tulle dress she slowed the track right down and gave it a political slant: While singing the lyrics “You know that you’re toxic” quotes and images of President-elect Trump were projected behind her.
The event, which raised $7.5 million for Malawi’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit, featured performances from Ariana Grande and an auction of Madonna’s personal items.
