As the child of two of the most iconic figures of 90s music, Frances Bean Cobain grew up surrounded by her fair share of flannel and baby doll dresses. The styles fashion kids are lusting over today were partially popularised by her parent’s Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. And like most of us, it can sometimes be hard seeing anything your folks do as cool — even when their images are populating your friend’s Instagram feeds.
Speaking to Vogue the 24-year-old artist and star of Marc Jacob’s new spring/summer 17 campaign admits, “I don’t fucking care what they did in the 90s; I wasn’t around and it’s not relevant to me. Yes the 90s were influential, for sure, but it’s just not my cup of tea. When it’s shoved down your throat every day for 24 years, you just stop caring.”
You really can’t blame her, the decade casts a long shadow over her life. Any while our current nostalgia is flavoured with childhood throwbacks and outfit ideas, she understands the price cultural figures often pay for influencing the world around them. Reflecting on her own dad’s mark on fashion she comments: “I find it interesting where grunge originated from, and then where it was taken, which was high fashion. My dad was so poor that they kept going to Goodwill to get donated ripped jeans. It wasn’t a fashion decision; it was an ‘I don’t have any money, I have no other choice’ type of decision.”
It’s not the first time she’s demonstrated that she’s not blinded by her family’s own mythology. Speaking to Rolling Stone about her dad’s band last year she admitted, “I don’t really like Nirvana that much…The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in.”
