The campaign to desexualize the female nipple will take to the streets of Iceland’s capital next Saturday.

Icelandic nipple-freedom fighters will take their cause to parliament square in Reykjavik on June 13. But they aren’t battling against the government – in fact, they have been given a grant by the state-sponsored Human Rights Association and have received high-profile political support. When the Icelandic #freethenipple feminists hit the headlines in March, bright future MP Björt Olafsdóttir tweeted, “This is to feed children. Shove it up your patriarchy. #FreeTheNipple” along with an image of her left breast, causing a media frenzy.

Instead, the #FreeTheNipple movement is protesting against the sexist skin-banning policies of social media site likes Instagram and Facebook, who repeatedly remove images of female nipples, describing them as “instances of abuse.”

Women attending the Reykjavik march do not have to bare their breasts – they can just wear a bra, go braless under clothes or let their nips out for some air if they so choose. “This is about making space for girls and women to gather together to be themselves,” organizer Stefanía Pálsdóttir told Iceland Monitor. Expect performances from musicians, speeches from activists and proud areolas as far as the eye can see.
