After some initial optimism about going ahead with one of the world’s most iconic music festivals, it was announced today that Glastonbury 2021 will not be going ahead after all. The 50th anniversary spectacular was initially meant to take place in June 2020, and after being cancelled thanks to the coronavirus pandemic (not that you need reminding) there was some hope that the postponement to this June would still be able to go ahead.
Alas, even with vaccine developments, it was not meant to be. In a statement posted to social media today, Emily Eavis and her dad Michael Eavis confirmed that summer 2021 will be festival-free. “With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place,” the statement read. “This will be another forced fallow year for us.”
The good news — if you look really, really hard to find it — is that for those who managed to score a spot at Glastonbury all the way back in the halcyon days of October 2019, those tickets will still roll over to 2022. But admittedly, yes, 2022 currently seems like a long, long way away.
“In spite of our efforts to move Heaven & Earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the Festival happen this year,” the organisers went on to say on Glastonbury’s official website. “We are so sorry to let you all down. We thank you for your incredible continued support and let’s look forward to better times ahead.”
