It’s 2018 and the future truly is now, as a new Frida Kahlo exhibition is available fully online. So you can enjoy the experience of going to a gallery to see her work without leaving your sofa or getting out of your PJs. Google has worked with 33 museums in seven countries to arrange a groundbreaking survey of the artist’s work, including hundreds of pieces by the artist that have never been digitised before.
The result, Faces of Frida, is an extraordinary retrospective featuring the artist’s sketches, paintings, self-portraits, diary entries, photographs and letters. It even includes secret messages revealing details of her personal life with husband Diego Rivera, and explores Frida’s relationship with her body, her health struggles and her political views. The project is described as “a closer look at the many faces of Frida Kahlo through her life, art and legacy.”
Given that Frida continues to be phenomenally popular — her wardrobe is currently the subject of an exhibition at the V&A — she was the obvious choice. Jesus Garcia, Head of Hispanic Communications at Google, explained: “Frida’s name kept coming up as a top contender when we started to think of what artist would be the best to feature in a retrospective. There’s so much of her that was not known and could still be explored from an artistic perspective and life experience.”
