Celebrating some of the last pre-internet subcultures, the third instalment of our first ever TV series, Street, Sound and Style, premieres at midnight tonight on Channel 4. Episode 3 focuses on the tribes of the 90s, from Nirvana-loving grungers, who were disillusioned with the corporate culture that had taken over the music industry in the late 80s, to the mix of Jamaican and Jungle influences of the UK hardcore scene, and the cybergoths who mixed dark elements with neon clubwear and stomped in furry boots to electronic dance music.

Directed by the king of counterculture documentary, Ewen Spencer, the Street, Sound and Style series focuses on UK youth and music scenes since 1980, when i-D magazine first launched. The first episode, The New Breed, uncovered the Mod revivalists and the blend of punk and ska in the 80s, with the turbulent political backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain. In episode 2, The Perfect Kiss, the soul boys and girls of the mid 80s fell in love with US exported funk and soul, designer-loving football-mad Casuals peacocked on terraces and dance culture took a trip to Ibiza, where it mixed with an eclectic global crowd. The fourth and final episode will air next week, focusing on the subcultures and style tribes of the early 00s.
