It’s true, the best original song Oscar nominees usually a bit snoozy (well, when they aren’t done by Elliott Smith, who was nominated in 1997 for “Miss Misery,” which, let’s face it, was a once-in-a-lifetime event).
This year, Billboard decided to make melding each and every nominated song into a bite-size nugget. They enlisted the vocal talents of the 12-person acapella band Range to record and videotape a mashup of the five nominated tunes. (Sadly, ANHONI, the first trans performer to be nominated — for her song “Manta Ray” — was not invited to perform at the Oscars and thus is boycotting them altogether.)
Click below to see and hear the Academy-nominated songs “Earned It” (Fifty Shades of Grey), “Manta Ray” (Racing Extinction), “Simple Song #3” (Youth), “Til It Happens to You” (The Hunting Ground), and “Writing’s on the Wall” (Spectre) all blended together in a smooth, finger-snapping blend.
