Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon, has partnered with the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare on a new STI prevention and awareness campaign. The pairing might initially seem random, but the Sailor Scouts are eternally fighting for the betterment of the human race — that includes making sure we’re on top of our sexual health.
The campaign involves the distribution of posters and 60,000 pink, heart-shaped packages around the country. The packages include condoms and informative pamphlets — all baring Sailor Moon’s face. The central message of the campaign is a rework of Sailor Moon’s famous line, “In the name of the moon, I will punish you!” This time she declares, “If you don’t get tested, I will punish you!” It’s a pretty extreme threat, but whatever works.
The overall intention of the push is to encourage women to practice safe sex and see a doctor if anything is amiss. Not only is it good advice, but a little easier to digest when it comes in a hot pink heart.
