Huang Jiaqi is a creative director and photographer from Chengdu in China. He takes stark, front-lit portraits of himself and his friends exploring their relationship to fashion, technology, nature and sex. They’re strangely beautiful images, evocative yet restrained, funny and fetish-y all at once. In one shot Huang might be licking a flower or a fish head and, in the next, he’s artfully tied up in ropes and suspended from the ceiling. They are images that pull you out of your reverie in a welcome kind of way.

At the end of last year, Huang was recognised by the British Fashion Council — with judges including Adut Akech, Paloma Elsesser, Charles Jeffrey and Isamaya Ffrench — as one of their 50 New Wave talents from around the world.

Fans of his boundary-defying work, we invited Huang to take a series of self-portraits for us and the results, including his bespoke floral wearables, are below.
