Provoked by Tarana Burke’s #MeToo campaign and the powerful open letter penned by women in the Swedish Music Industry, 400-odd women in Australian music have written an open letter of their own, titled #meNomore.
The letter is call to action, demanding zero tolerance when it comes to sexual harassment, violence, and objectification in the industry. “We’ll be working with others in the Entertainment Industry,” the letter reads, “to investigate claims of repeat offences and toxic workplaces.”
The letter goes on to detail dozen of women’s experiences of sexual misconduct in the workplace — from lewd comments to physical assault. Kira Puru, Nina Las Vegas, Simona Castricum, Courtney Barnett, and High Tension’s Karina Utomo have all signed the letter, as have Sarah Blasko, The Veronicas, and The Preatures’ Isabella Manfredi.
“We are women who work in the Australian music industry. We are artists, musicians, managers, lawyers, booking agents, record label employees, publicists and more,” the letter states. “#meNOmore is an all-inclusive movement — particularly encouraging participation of Indigenous, POC and LGBTQIA+ musical communities who have experienced intersections of sexual discrimination, harassment and violence…Whilst this letter has been initiated by women in the industry, please know we will work hard to create a support network which is available to everyone.”
