Michael Dodman, also known as Huxley, has been a staple in the UK house music scene for some time now. The DJ and producer’s accomplished sound covers many points of the genre, with killer releases that have seen him take on main room house, techno and UK bass. His 2012 banger Let It Go, released on Cedric Maison’s Hypercolour imprint, propelled him into the big leagues and we’ve since seen him form a formidable relationship with Will Saul’s Aus Music, having just dropped his sixth release for the label.
Taking things into his own hands, December 2015 saw Huxley launch his own imprint, No Idea’s Original, that came to life with the release of a hefty J.Phlip collab. As well as having just remixed the legendary Tricky, Huxley continues to play the field with forthcoming remixes on 2020 Vision, VIVa, Moda Black and Knee Deep in Sound as well as an upcoming cut on the Aus100 compilation. This summer will see him once again kick off the summer in style at Hideout Festival and BSTK Festival, and warming up for the events, he’s gone deep into the mix exclusively for i-D.
“I wanted to mix a selection of stuff that I’m feeling right now and some of the stuff I don’t get to play out,” Huxley told i-D. “I also just wanted have fun with it and a make it a bit more interesting, sonically. Hopefully you dig it.”
What are the top three tracks getting heavy rotation in your sets?|
Chambray, Makin Me
Leonardo Gonnelli, Roxon
Mr Gone, do 4 love (Radio Slave mix – Dem re-edit)
What’s the most hedonistic party you’ve ever been to?
A barbecue for my mate’s birthday at his nan’s house.
What’s the most phenomenal clubbing venue in the world and why?
God knows, I probably haven’t been to it yet.
If you could go back to back with any DJ, at any venue, who would it be and why?
I’ve always been a big fan of Loco Dice’s DJ sets, so probably him. Been watching him play since Circo Loco days and he’s never disappointed.
What would your dream rider consist of?
I don’t want other people spending money on me, but if I had to choose, a platter of oysters/lobster and other assorted shellfish all washed down with a bottle of DP and a basket of puppies to wipe my hands on after (and hug).
What does your actual rider consist of?
Nothing too much really! Just spiced rum/vodka, coke, beers and water. I’m a pretty cheap date.
What’s your favourite party anthem of all time?
Easy! Armand Van Helden, You Don’t Know Me.
What producer are you predicting big things from this year?
Boxia, Pierre Codarin and Lee Walker.
Where do you go when the record ends and the lights come on?
I used to be the first guy to the afterparty, but I’m old now so I normally go back to the hotel, maybe have another beer and sleep… but sometimes I’ll still make it to the afters.
What track would you end the night on when everyone’s still awake and its time to go to sleep?
At the moment I’m loving Esther Silex, Oskar.
Finish the sentence, the music sounds better with…
CAKE.
