Liverpool lass Lauren Lo Sung has had one foot in the rave since the age of 16. Skanking to funky house and hitting all-nighters at Sven Vath’s Cocoon night in Ibiza sparked an interest in house and techno, that would see her become one of the scene’s youngest underground producers and DJs.
At 18, Lauren started running her own parties in sweaty basement clubs around Liverpool, Manchester and London and now, at 25, the Liverpudlian is able to tick opening up for Carl Cox at Space off her bucket list (he even danced behind her with one of her LOLiFE tee shirts on). Now, we welcome the selector into the mix for i-D, bringing a deep and dubby blend of house and techno for her debut i-DJ. Enter the sound of Lauren Lo Sung.
“My mix builds with dubby grooves, from warm-up to peak time Dub Techno. Filled with some fresh sounds from some of my favourite artists, and a couple of my unreleased tracks which are coming out soon on Hector’s Vatos Locos label.”
What are the top three tracks getting heavy rotation in your sets?
Subb-an, Feel for You.
Lauren LoSung, 11.
Jose.M & Tacoman, Equinox (Samu.l Remx).
What’s the most hedonistic party you’ve been to?
Hard to pick off the top of my head but I would probably say TRMNL in Birmingham, where I’ve held a residency for the past three years. It’s pretty special, the vibe there is incredible each and every time and the crowd are always full of energy.
What’s the most phenomenal clubbing venue in the world and why?
I am yet to experience a lot of them but I visited Berlin for the first time early this year and was blown away by Tresor’s basement. Dark, dingy, prison-like and the sound and atmosphere was superb. The perfect setting for proper techno!
If you could go back to back with any DJ, at any venue, who would it be and why?
I would most probably say Subb-an, he plays similar music to me and he’s a really cool/humble guy who blows me away each time I watch him play, he really knows how to get a good groove going. The venue would have to be Panorama Bar in Berlin!
History is made at night… What was the best night of your life?
It would have to be playing for Carl Cox’s Revolution at Space Ibiza last week. I have visited that club almost every summer since I was 17 and to play there was a magical, overwhelming feeling. My family came out to support me too which made the experience 10 times better. It really was an emotional night for me, especially when Carl Cox himself came to the DJ booth to watch my set and had one of my LOLiFE T-shirts on! I almost broke down in tears!
What would your dream rider consist of?
Porn star martinis, spicy pizza and coffee Patron!
What’s your favourite party anthem of all time?
I like a lot, but if I had to chose one, probably N-Joi – Anthem.
What producer are you predicting big things from this year?
Diego Krause is killing it at the moment, every release he puts out is solid. Loving stuff by Samu.l, Mandar and Oi (Mulen) too!
Where do you go when the record ends and the light comes on?
Either have a few drinks with friends, or if it’s a late one I go to bed! I love sleep and I’m not much of an after-partier!
What track would you end the night on when everyone’s still awake and it’s time to go to sleep?
I like to end on a classic or something random and fun. All depends really but I have played the likes of AVH, U Don’t Know me and Outkast, Ms. Jackson recently! It’s nice to get the crowd doing a sing-a-long at the end!
Finish the sentence, the music sounds better with…
Those that you love.
