Watching Iggy Azalea’s public fall from grace last year was confronting, particularly as she made little effort to justify her actions or explain her position in any credible way at the time. Her involvement in Twitter and IRL wars with determined personalities like Azealia Banks and Nicki Minaj as well as her past, unforgivable, comments around race and sexuality overshadowed any of her creative projects. And this was a shame because while Iggy said some stupid, damaging things, most of her actions point to the fact that she’s neither racist or homophobic.

As a performer whose early work was so fresh and defining (think tracks like Pu$$yWorkandChange Your Life) she seemed to get lost in a quagmire of negative publicity and (post Fancy) average performances. When she cancelled her Great Escape Tour last year out of the blue it was a definite sign all was not right.

She’s now come out and revealed in an interview with Schön! Magazine that she suffered a psychotic breakdown. She shared, “Last year, I felt like I was definitely not in control of the media’s narrative of me…It made me feel very out of control of my own life or my ability to have my own perception of who I was. You don’t want someone else writing your narrative and making you the villain. Then I just realised that, you know what, you can’t control it and I think I accepted that and moved on to living my life.”

With a wedding on the way and renewed energy, let’s hope Iggy rises above the bullshit and gives us a glimpse of her potential and the reason we fell in love with her in the first place.
