Ikea has its finger firmly on the pulse, that’s for certain. In 2016, the Swedish furniture powerhouse worked with Antwerp legend Walter Van Beirendonck on a number of prints, and soon after, Kanye West was asking to collaborate. So was Off-White’s Virgil Abloh, with a little more success. Earlier this year, Ikea also shared word of a collaboration with Byredo founder Ben Gorham: a range of home scents set for release in 2019.
The most exciting Ikea news of all? That came last week, courtesy of Game of Thrones’ costume designer Michele Clapton. He shared a little secret: the capes of Westeros are really Ikea rugs. Yes, the HBO show which scores around 10 million viewers an episode.
Never one to disappoint, the Nordic retailer followed by releasing instructions on how to create a cape just like the ones worn by the Night’s Watch Battalion. To make your own vinter skuldervarmer, you’ll need a pair of scissors and a sheepskin rug (SKOLD, LUDDE or non-sheepskin TEJN work). Cut a line towards the middle of the rug, then a hole in the centre big enough for your head. That’s it. Weathering and muddying is up to you.
To illustrate, Ikea employees posed for a photo in their own GoT inspired capes. Looks like we’re all one step closer to becoming Jon Snow, and we can finally brag about finishing an Ikea project.
