Issa Rae, the creator-writer-and-star of HBO series Insecure, has just been named CoverGirl’s newest ambassador. And the multi-hyphenate is pretty pleased with the position, to say the least. Taking to Twitter Issa wrote, “In all my awkward, black years I never imagined I’d be a CoverGirl! I’m so honoured and so excited.”
Issa, whose career began with the YouTube series Awkward Black Girl, said in a statement it was CoverGirl’s values that drew her to partner with them. “Becoming a CoverGirl means a lot because the brand recognises just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways,” she explained. The writer also posted what could be our first look at the campaign on her Instagram.
Last year CoverGirl partnered with beauty blogger Nura Afia, the brand’s first spokesmodel to wear a hijab, and James Charles, the first male CoverGirl. Issa’s new ambassador status means she will soon appear alongside fellow ambassadors Sofia Vergara and Zendaya.
Meanwhile, Issa’s star keeps rising. Just last month she starred in Jay-Z’s Friends remake as Rachel Green, and earlier this year she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Insecure. The show just wrapped its second season and has been renewed for a third season with HBO.
