Courtney Love got a lot of hopes up over the weekend with an Instagram post suggesting a Hole reunion might be in the cards. The frontwoman photo with her band mates — drummer Patty Schemel and bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur — with the ambiguous caption, “with the girls, serving up a Hole lot of something. Maybe.” She also tagged the one missing member, guitarist Eric Erlandson.
But before you pull out the babydoll dresses it’s worth remembering that Courtney has a history of teasing reunions. In 2014 she said she’d been rehearsing new material with Eric, Patty and Melissa, but later recanted on the possibility of a comeback. Turns out she hadn’t shared her plans with the rest of the band. At the time she told The Telegraph, “We may have made out but there is no talk of marriage…It’s very frail, nothing might happen, and now the band are all flipping out with me.” Considering this time the rest of the band were at least tagged in the post, we can assume they have a bit more of an idea.
Courtney has previously spoken against classic bands reforming, likening it to “selling out.” In 2014 she told Paper, “Me and Melissa and Patty and [Celebrity Skin guitarist Eric Erlandson] have rehearsed a few times…In order to pull that off, we’d have to make some music that’s relevant to now, and we’d have to get a modern producer. I’m not going to do the oldies circuit.”
We hope that this means not only are the band coming back, but they’re bringing some 2016 bangers with them.
