It’s a damn good morning, isn’t it? The 2018 Sugar Mountain lineup just landed, and we’ve gotta take our hats off to the team — it’s one of the best they’ve put together. Actress and J Hus will be making the trip over from the UK, joined by Honey Dijon, Laurel Halo and Joey Bada$$ from the US, plus i-D favourite Sevdaliza from the Netherlands. And of course, Boiler Room is back (and better than ever). Expect a new location.
Le1f’s moving virtual reality project VIA ALICE leads the packed arts lineup, rounded out by some brilliant Australian talents. Choreographer Amrita Hepi is working with the Pasefika Victoria Choir to create a contemporary Waiata; artist Justin Shoulder will collaborate with producer CORIN and video artist Tristan Jalleh; and musician Marcus Whale has something special in the works with artist Athena Thebus.
There’s also a surprise coming, it’s called Future Culture, and it’s a brand new addition to the festival. It’s being curated by Grace Dlabik, presented by BE. and yours truly, i-D! Here’s what Sugar Mountain’s hinting: “the space will be an explosion of colour, fashion, photography, art and music. The curation will be centred around creative pillars with a focus on shifting paradigms.” Sound good, huh?
