As a long term advocate of gender fluid dressing and embracing a white Batman suit as formal attire, it’s fair to say Jaden Smith always approaches fashion in his own way. So when he went through the teenage rite of passage that is the “goth stage”, he didn’t limit himself to blasting Nightwish at a suburban train station. In a conversation with Numéro he admitted that his goth period involved literally identifying as a vampire. He explained, “During a period of my life, I was Gothic… I was only wearing black and I was hiding from the sun because I was a vampire.” He added that part of his transformation included “only wearing black trench coats,” although he never got into the blood drinking side of things. He was more of a fashion vamp, which we’re personally pretty into.

In hindsight he could have been hinting at his flirtation with the undead when he tweeted, “I’m Not A Person” earlier this month. Although in the interview he noted that he’s since returned to the land of the living, or at least non-monochromatic style: “Now I’m not a vampire, I’m out of this phase… I open myself up to wear more colorful things, to go out in daylight. I share much more mixed energy.” Which is probably for the best, his style game is too strong to limit himself to trench-coats. Although, here’s hoping Jaden Smith circa Vampire Phase is the surprise Halloween costume hit of the year.
