Over the last few years, Jamie’s dedication to his intergalactic pursuits have made him one of the most popular DJs in the universe. Sprinkling his magic stardust over several projects, including a label, a four-piece band (Hot Natured) and a seminal night at the world’s most famous underground club, DC10 in Ibiza. With brand new EP, ‘Planets, Spaceships’ out now, (his second full solo EP on his own label) i-D caught up with the cosmonaut during one of his rare visits back to planet Earth…
So, your EP is out now… can you tell us a bit about that?
Well, I haven’t done anything like this on Hot Creations since the first one. I’ve been so tied up with the Hot Natured album over the last few years. I’ve done bits and bobs here and there, but I haven’t really done any solo stuff at all. I’ve been feeling really inspired to do my own thing recently. There won’t be another Hot Natured album until 2015, so my time has been freed up a lot more.
I think a lot of people will be happy to see you’re back doing solo stuff.
I know, I’m super excited about getting a bunch of music out over the next six months or so.
And the title is inspired by your personal beliefs, I guess?
Yeah I’m a massive sci-fi fan and I’m into anything cosmic! I made the vocal bit in LA last February during some time off. I was staying at a really nice house there and it had this amazing view. I was just making tracks with words that came into my head and I recorded those words myself, but I felt they needed something extra so I sent them to Daniela from Digitaria to see what she could come up with and she sent me a load of stuff back. I sat on it for a while, I didn’t feel it had a strong enough kick on it. Anyway, one night I played it out at DC10 and it really worked, so I finished it up, mastered it and put it on the EP with a few others things I’d done over the summer.
Do you believe there’s life elsewhere in the universe?
Yeah definitely. Obviously I have no proof but common sense tells me that there’s got to be. Given the fact that there are thousands, if not millions of stars out there there’s got to be just as many inhabitable planets. To say that there’s no intelligent on any of them is … well, the odds are heavily in favour of there being life elsewhere.
If you could raise the cash to go on your own space mission, where would you like to go?
It’s always been my dream to have sex with a sexy alien, not a weird one with tentacles or anything, just a humanoid with blue skin, the kind you’d see on Star Trek. So I’d go where the hottest aliens are. My girlfriend would let me sleep with an alien as well.
Haha, like when you’re both allowed to have one celebrity you can sleep with if you ever get the chance.
Yeah exactly. I don’t care about celebrities, just a blue alien or one with spots… even with ridges on their nose. Yeah the blue skin ones for sure.
Like Avatar!
Yeah but they’re too big. Now, if they were human sized….
