After months of teasing us, Janet Jackson has finally announced her new album Unbreakable, her first collection of original material in seven years. The 17-track set will be released worldwide on October 2 and includes her recent single with J. Cole, No Sleeep, as well as a collaboration with Missy Elliott titled Burnitup! Janet has recorded the album with her longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, with whom she crafted classic hits such as What Have You Done for Me Lately?, Together Again and All for You.
According to a statement on the singer’s website, the new album’s themes “will include Janet’s views on where we stand today as individuals and as the inter-related elements of a planet. Some of these relate to her convictions passionately expressed in Rhythm Nation 1814, including the need to bring things out in the open and to have a dialogue. The album also will mark the first time Janet Jackson has opened up about her brother Michael and with reflections concerning her youth”.
To celebrate the announcement, Janet has shared the album’s title track, a glistening mid-tempo jam which could be read as a love letter to her fans. “The world can’t break down the connection / Cause our love is divine / And it’s unbreakable,” she sings on the chorus. Janet began her Unbreakable World Tour at the end of August and has dates booked in until next March. There’s no question, Janet is back for good!
