“I’ve always dressed really smart, some people got it, some people didn’t.” Hold on to your colourful trousers, wavy London musician Jimothy Lacoste has a new single out and it’s all about fashion. Naturally, our interest was piqued. The 19-year-old born Timothy Gonzales has had quite a year. From the DIY music videos showcasing his distinctive voice, style and dance moves blew up (one of which landed him in trouble with TFL) to a stack of UK and European tours, slots playing at Reading and Leeds Festivals, Boiler Room — not to mention lots of Radio 1 plays — Jimothy’s officially landed in the collective British consciousness.
With his honest, feel-good lyrics and a sound that’ll make you nostalgic for a simpler time, Jimothy has proven that he’s more than just a viral video star. He might not take himself too seriously, but he certainly takes his music seriously. Ever on trend and super timely (if you read our beautiful content, you’ll know that you just missed LFW) his new single is called Fashion. Dressed up in his best smart shirt, looking like a little millionaire, the risk-taker experienced the underwhelming fun of the fashion party for the very first time this season. “We go there and we flex,” he told us over email. “It’s just cool to see so many cocaine faces in one place.” We couldn’t possibly comment.
Good news for Jimothy fans: here’s an exclusive first play of your boy’s new music video. So, what’s it all about? “It’s about fashion and how I love to dress smart,” Jimothy told us over email last night. “Looking like a young Bill Gates or an old man from Bilbao. This song is for people who love to dress up. People sometimes get offended by certain clothing styles… this track is a reminder that it’s just fun and you should express yourself with fashion.”
Oh and there’s a zebra in it, because, as Jimothy points out: “they have a beautiful pattern on their skin, proving that even animals have amazing style.”
Life is getting quite exciting!
