Jonathan Saunders is stepping down as creative director of his eponymous label, and has made the decision with his investor and business partner, Eiesha Bharti Pasricha, to close the label. A release from the brand this morning stated that Saunders’ decision was made “for personal reasons,” and confirmed that they although he intends to “wind the company down,” the brand will fulfill orders for the spring/summer 16 collection.
“It is not a decision that I take lightly and I am eternally grateful to my team for all their hard work and dedication,” Saunders said in a statement, adding that, “Eiesha has not only been a fantastic partner over the last year but an incredible support and we remain close. I am very thankful for all of the friends that I have across the industry, and I look forward to working with everyone again soon on future creative projects”. Bharti Pasricha said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed supporting one of the most talented British designers of our times. Our decision to part ways was not easy and I wish Jonathan every success for the future.”
The decision is a shock for the industry, who saw Saunders’ label go from strength to strength and celebrate its 10 year anniversary in 2014. To mark the occasion, the Glaswegian designer introduced i-D to his fashion family, explaining that their support made it, “a hell of a lot easier to start a brand [in London] than it is in other capital cities.” We’re sad to see such a successful London label close its doors, but we can’t wait to see what Saunders will do next.
