    k-$: music to…paati to

When the DJ says “let’s patti” she’s not only talking about getting loose, but also referencing how her music intersects with her South African heritage.

Cape Town based DJ K- $’s favourite phrase is “let’s paati,” she says it a lot. She is, of course, referring to having a good time. For her that can mean playing dominoes around the pool at her childhood home in the city’s southern suburbs or dominating the decks at parties and festivals all across Cape Town. But it also has a less obvious meaning: flipping the more familiar “let’s party,” she’s shouting out her identity as a coloured South African with a powerful connection to her heritage, spiritually, geographically aesthetically and most importantly, musically. Now we know what it means, lets hear what it sounds like.
