Remember when Kim Kardashian married a professional NBA player by the name of Kris Humphries for 72 days? It’s okay if your recollection is hazy: nobody remembers it that clearly—not even Kim’s family—because she’s with her one true love now. It’s a partnership so perfect all that came before it was instantly rendered obsolete. There really isn’t a couple more perfectly suited to one another than Kanye and Kim. But there was a time where it felt like they weren’t going to end up this way.
In 2011 Kim was poised to marry Kris Humphries but Kanye felt he had to warn her it wasn’t the right thing to do, so he started blowing up her phone. Before 2011, Kanye didn’t actually even have a mobile. “I got a phone because somebody decided they wanted to marry Kris Humphries,” he announced on the final episode of Kocktails with Khloe.
“I wasn’t up to anything,” Kanye explains, “and I looked on the internet and there was Kim Kardashian with some extremely tall person, and I was like I need to call her or something.” His approach to rescuing Kim for a doomed relationship seemed largely based on funny pictures—what we now know as memes.
“I started sending her pictures of certain basketball players that used to be cool, that now wear their pants really high, like: this is your future!” Longtime Kanye friend John Legend was there with his legendary wife Chrissy Teigen to corroborate the story. “The only number you called was Kim,” he agreed.
Kanye proposed in October 2013 and he and Kim married in March of 2014. Memes are powerful.
