In tandem with this week’s release of her first-ever live record, Before The Dawn, Kate Bush has dropped a brand new clip for her updated rendition of “And Dream of Sheep.” The track originally appeared in the “Ninth Wave” suite of her seminal classic Hounds of Love. Now, over 30 years later, its video finds Bush revisiting the exact imagery she used for the album’s photoshoot in 1985 — right down to the orange life vest.
Assuming the role of Shakespeare’s submerged heroine Ophelia once again, Bush floats in murky waters before giving in to the tide. A note on the artist’s website reveals that the clip’s production “became more realistic than Kate had imagined,” after the artist developed a mild bout of hypothermia from spending an extended period of time in a massive tank at Pinewood Studios. Always the trooper, she returned to work after a day of rest, and “everyone agreed that it had added to the authenticity of the performance.”
Bush also recently sat down with BBC’s Matt Everitt for her first interview in five years, in which she discussed the anxieties behind returning to the stage for her Before The Dawn concert series at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in 2014. She elaborated on her friendship with Prince, saying, “He was so prolific. He used to make me laugh because whilst I was working on an album, he would’ve done two world tours, a couple albums, a film…” The three-disc Before The Dawn set will be released Friday.
