The concept of functional fashion has really gone out the window in the age of coronavirus. A warm coat with pockets for your phone and keys? Who needs it, we aren’t leaving the house. Comfortable footwear? I’ll walk through my living room barefoot or in perspex 7-inch stilettos thanks, there is no in-between. With all of us stuck inside for the foreseeable, we might as well dress how we damn well want. For some (me) that is an endless parade of hoodies, sweatpants and gym leggings, but for others, it’s something a little fancier.
If you’re in the latter category then a new auction from Vestiaire Collective will give you the pick me up you need today. The platform has just launched a special COVID-19 charity initiative, with some fashionable VIPs reaching into the wardrobes to do a spring clean for a good cause.
Fanny Moizant, Vestiaire Collective’s president and co-founder, asked friends and family to donate some of their most iconic items to be auctioned off to raise money for the World Health Organisation’s coronavirus fund, as well as hospitals across Spain, France and Italy.
The result is an impressive inventory from some of fashion’s biggest names. i-D cover star Kate Moss has donated her favourite leopard print faux fur coat, which we foresee sparking the biggest bidding war. “Her fashion influence goes without saying,” Fanny Moizant told Vogue. “She has such a recognisable style and this jacket epitomises that.”
If you’re not in the market for Kate’s jacket though, there are also donations from Clare Waight Keller, Bella Freud, Carine Roitfeld and — deep breath here — Rachel Weisz, Anna Dello Russo, Laura Bailey, Charlotte Tilbury, Olivier Giroud, and Margherita Missoni. Thandi Newton has also contributed her Jimmy Choo collection.
“It’s great to see so many parts of the fashion industry act in such a resourceful way to support the effort,” Vestiaire’s co-founder said. “I’m really happy that we can use our platform and community to play a part.”
