Montreal producer Kaytranada has spoken out about his decision to come out, and his experience of depression in a new interview on radio show Sway in the Morning. The 23-year-old producer discussed a wide range of topics and opened up about issues including the mental and emotional effects that can accompany life on tour. The repetitive nature of touring is something that Kaytranada said he found difficult to deal with, leading to struggles with depression. He also discussed the experience of revealing his sexual orientation and its effect on his music, as well as how it is perceived by the music industry. “I see like, when people come out, they always get put in a box and I don’t think it’s right. I want my music to reach out to everybody,” he said.
Kaytranada caught the world’s attention with his 2013 EP Kaytra to Do, becoming a go-to producer for artists including Vic Mensa, Wiki, Rejjie Snow, Kali Uchis, and Talib Kweli, before dropping his critically acclaimed debut album, 99.9%, last month.
