In March of this year, Kehlani was hospitalized following a suspected suicide attempt. The internet responded en masse: there were countless messages of support, and some extremely cruel accusations of “attention seeking” from high profile artists like Chris Brown. Kehlani was forced to delete all of her social media channels and take a step back to focus on her recovery.
Now she’s back and better than ever — she landed a song on the Suicide Squad soundtrack, and recently sat down for a no-holds-barred interview with LA radio station Power 106. The wide-ranging conversation touches on a new album, her mental health today, and the place she was at when she was admitted to the hospital.
“I’m strong enough to thank God to be able to talk about it in a positive way and only push forward in an inspirational way,” Kehlani said, in reference to the darker period of her life. “I think it was a combination of things,” she continued, “It was one: the response was insane. Two: I was a 21-year-old going through the biggest heartbreak of my life…It was really recovering from all these things at once.”
This isn’t the first time Kehlani has spoken out about mental health. Earlier in the year she stopped a show to assure her audience that if they ever felt the same way as she did they should know, “you are worth it, you are perfect, you need to be here ever single day, you are meant to be here.”
