In a newly released clip Kelela takes us behind the scenes of her LMK music video, pulling back the curtain to reveal more than just an insight into the production process.
Kelela opens up about the inspiration for LMK, the first single of the album Take Me Apart. “I wrote the song after a friend told me a story about a guy she was seeing,” Kelela says, describing the song as “an ode to all the ladies that aren’t trying to go that deep but still want to have respectful interactions.”
“A lot of women who aren’t in a relationship, or aren’t looking to be in a relationship,” Kelela says, “like to have healthy, respectful sex and good relationships that aren’t official relationships, there’s just a good rapport.” She says the “anthemic” single is all about celebrating women who want to have casual sex with someone they gets along with.
“When a woman is demanding you respect her, a man usually thinks that she wants to be with him,” Kelela continues, “it’s an ode to all the ladies that aren’t trying to go that deep.”
Kelela’s second single Frontline featured in an episode of Issa Rae’s Golden Globe-nominated comedy Insecure. But it’ll be a few weeks time until Kelela serves up any more new tracks, with the release date for Take Me Apart set for October 6. She’s been working on the album for more than four years, and it’s set to feature collaboration with Arca, Jam City, and Bok Bok.
