While stadium tours are almost always ritzy affairs, it’s the details around the performance itself that elevate a show to iconic status. What a performer chooses to wear, for example, is a large part of what makes for a particularly spellbinding spectacle. In an attempt to blow anyone who ever plans to wear clothes on stage again out of the water, Maluma has teamed up with Dior to supply the wardrobe for his forthcoming 11:11 tour.
Debuting in Athens on March 11, the Colombian singer will wear the Kim Jones-designed outfits for 11:11’s full run, ending April 4. The pieces we’ll see on stage are adapted from Dior’s SS20 collection, created in collaboration with artist Daniel Arsham. Kim’s signature tailored take on sportswear silhouettes naturally take centre stage, the highlight being a white organza jacket decorated with electric blue georgette hand-embroidery by Lesage. We’ll also see the triumphant return of the Galliano-era newspaper print, which will be printed on sheer jumpsuits.
“I love Maluma’s unique energy, his abundant creativity, his passion for life,” said Kim in an official release. “I’m very happy to accompany him onstage and support his talent for this special event.”
As you’d expect from a man about to receive a full bespoke Dior wardrobe, Kim’s enthusiasm for the partnership was mirrored by Maluma. “Fashion, just like my music, has allowed me to express myself creatively and be myself without needing to change to fit in,” he said. “When I met Kim and the Dior team during my first Paris Fashion Week, they gave me the same energy. I am excited that they will be part of the 11:11 vision through design and help me offer fans a full experience of music, fashion, energy with no cultural barriers.”
Whether this latest chapter in the history of partnerships will go on to be as iconic as that between his “Medellin” collaborators Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier remains to be seen. But, given the kudos of both Maluma and Kim, something tells us that it just might be.
