A figure from an online metaverse dances on loop, sometimes obscured by bands of falling data. These are the visuals artist Emilie Gervais created for KT Spit’s latest single, ‘Hows the weather’. According to Emilie, it’s dark with a chance of rainbows. Press play on the video’s exclusive premiere, and read our chat with KT about the love the song was written for.
How’d you and Emilie get in touch?
[Artist] Molly Soda asked me if I wanted to be involved in a project which would involve an artist making visuals to one of my songs. Emilie was one of the artists she suggested. I love Emilie’s work. I find it harsh in a good way but also very girly and clever and cool. I knew she’d make something that would really contrast with how I’d previously presented my music aesthetically. I was super excited she agreed to the collaboration. While that project never eventuated, Emilie used the visuals she’d created as a basis for the clip.
There’s a figure dancing through the video, it looks like it’s from the online online metaverse IMVU. What role do online lives and worlds play in your music?
Hmmm, I have trouble mentally separating my online worlds from my other worlds. I was to talking to author/artist/babe Holly Childs about how being frequently sick with a slow body and limited memory but a super hectic mind can make you really web compatible. Working online makes it possible to be very slow and very fast at the same time – to overshare and be vulnerable while also remaining distant. Living online lives also results in constant textual documentation of our relationships, which is kind of scary when you consider how easy it makes it for all our communication and life in general to be monitored, but I think it’s cool for poetry. I copy and paste a lot of chats and turn them into lyrics.
Tell me a little bit about the song. Was it informed by anything happening in your life?
Well, it was more inspired by what wasn’t happening in my life. I had this thing where I didn’t want to fall in love or seriously date while I trying to make this album, Combluotion, which took me a very long time. I was going through a lot of intense stuff and I felt it was important for me to be alone and feel alone. A lot of the songs on Combluotion are sad because I was processing heaps of loss and disappointment. So then I wrote ‘hows the weather’ for someone I imagined I could be with when it was all over. It’s meant to be about a love that wants you to be deeply true to yourself. Complete all your solo missions, have your space, and then come over and bliss out when you’re done.
‘hows the weather’ appears on KT Spit’s debut LP Combluotion. You can buy or stream Combluotion now.
