Lady Gaga has been reportedly banned by China’s Communist party following a meeting with the Dalai Lama on Sunday. The singer met with the exiled Tibetan leader in a 20-minute encounter live-streamed on Facebook, leading many to question how anyone in the country managed to see it in the first place.
“We hope that people from the international community can be fully aware of his true colors and nature,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said of the Dalai Lama, who is considered a dangerous separatist by the country. “The purpose of his visits and activities in other countries is just to promote his proposal for Tibetan independence.”
The Dalai Lama has continually insisted that he is seeking only greater autonomy for Tibetans, and his appearance with Lady Gaga did little to suggest otherwise, taking in the not traditionally dangerous ideas of yoga and compassion to others.
“When you show more of a sense of concern for others’ well-being, then you also get the feeling, ‘I’m useful to others,'” he told Lady Gaga. “That brings self-confidence and meaning to life.”
The 80-year old Dalai Lama, once described as “wolf in monk’s robes” by the China’s one-party state, has been in exile from the county since 1959.
