Arhur Ashe, one of America’s most prolific tennis players, was also the first ever African American to win Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. He was ranked number 1 in 1968 and 1975, and retired in 1980. In 1964, Le Coq Sportif made Arthur Ashe a brand ambassador and named a tennis trainer after him, cementing the brands relationship with legendary sports stars and reiterating their support for them on and off the pitch. Clean and elegant, the trainers’ strict white and luxurious design stuck, until the ostentatious energy of the 80s meant that the shoes were deemed not wild enough, and were pulled from the shelves in the early 90s.
