It’s not groundbreaking to point out that a lot of the celebrity “news” you read is a pretty loose representation of reality. So when US Weekly published the story “20 Slimdown (sic) Diet Tips Stars Are Using” with an image of Lena Dunham it was a safe assumption the actress and writer hadn’t contributed the piece herself. But for Dunham, who has always been fiercely committed to presenting realistic presentations of bodies in her work, the suggestion she was an aspiration diet idol didn’t sit well.
The Girls creator has been open about her recent weight loss being linked to her ongoing physical and mental health battles, and complications with her endometriosis. In an Instagram post earlier this year she explained, “Right now I’m struggling to control my endometriosis through a healthy diet and exercise. So my weight loss isn’t a triumph and it also isn’t some sign I’ve finally given in to the voices of trolls.” Following the US Weekly article she once again took to Instagram to offer her own very personal 20 step diet program. The suggestions include: “an election that reveals the true depths of American misogyny” and watching institutions you love from Planned Parenthood to PBS be threatened by cartoon mustache-twirling villains.”
Alongside health and political concerns, she also references unsettling invasions of her privacy. Including having her phone number leaked. She ends the post stating, “I have no tips I give no tips I don’t want to be on this cover cuz it’s diametrically opposed to everything I’ve fought my whole career for and it’s not a compliment to me because it’s not an achievement thanx.”
