House of Holland’s spring/summer 15 girl likes the boys in the band. She waits at backstage doors for those who have prestige, those who promise fortune and fame, a life that’s so carefree. She’s Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana. She’s Bebe Buell. She’s Cythia Plaster Caster. Yet with the legends of these girls stitched into the psychedelic florcore, lurex cardigans and jacquard kick flares, Henry managed to balance all that nostalgia with the now. Who knew that 70s show could feel so damn fresh?
Exploring the backstage world of groupies, who were you inspired by?
Henry Holland: A photo of Jimi Hendrix was the starting point. He was wearing a floral suit and a floral shirt. I was drawn to the mixture of prints and vibe. Then I started looking at the groupies around him and especially Cynthia Albritton, who is better known as Cynthia Plaster Caster.
There’s an amazing documentary about her.
Henry Holland: There is! She used to go around making casts of all of their penises. Jimi Hendrix was the first, what a coup! From Cynthia and her casting fun, I started looking at all of those girls, what they were wore and what they were about at that time.
Who would you be a groupie to today?
Henry Holland: Now, I’ve got terrible taste in music so I’d be a Belieber or something.
Out of all of the super show walkers, who do you think is the most likely to plaster cast genitalia?
Henry Holland: Ha… Rollo (Sam Rollinson) because she’s the only one who would see the funny side.
