Jay Z has shared a Tidal exclusive playlist in response to recent shootings of black men by American police. Titled Songs For Survival, the playlist builds on the release of new song “Spiritual“and adds to the rapper’s continuing stance against police brutality, outrage at which has dominated the news following the deaths Alton Sterling in Louisiana last Tuesday and Philando Castile in Minnesota last Wednesday.
Featuring an image of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. as its cover art, the playlist includes songs such as Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam,” Outkast’s “Vibrate” and Common’s “Forever Begins.” These tracks accompany protest classics by Curtis Mayfield (“We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue”), Nina Simone (“Four Women”) and Gil Scott Heron (“The Revolution Will Not be Televised”).
Following on from the weekend’s demonstrations, Kendrick Lamar’s Black Lives Matter soundtracking “Alright” features centrally, as does the To Pimp a Butterfly rapper’s Beyonce collaboration, “FREEDOM.” Listen to the playlist exclusively on Tidal now.
