Fan fiction is not often authorized by the person who inspires it. But Mac DeMarco takes the same offbeat approach to all-things-fan as he does to music. How many other artists have offered to personally grill a hot dog and brew a cup of Joe for you in recent summers?
Today the Pepperoni Playboy made a few expectedly unconventional announcements related to his Mac DeMarco Fan Club. The most exciting of them, without a doubt, is the first-ever Mac DeMarco Fan Fiction contest. Those who have made their fan status official have from May 1 to August 15 to submit “a fun, original piece about anything Mac related” in the hopes of winning an equally fun, original, Mac-related prize: a drawing of the winner with Mac illustrated by one of Mac’s favorite artists, Stefan Marx. The first-prize piece will also be published in the annual Fan Club Fanzine.
If you need some fresh slacker-rock summer jams to spark that creativity, Mac’s got your back. Today he dropped the latest track off his upcoming new album This Old Dog, out next Friday on Captured Tracks. “One More Love Song” is a blissed out piece of synth and piano-peppered music, in much the same vein as the very sublime singles he released in January. And if you’re more visual than literary, fear not: The Mac DeMarco Fan Club is also currently recruiting an assistant skilled in dank Mac memes and/or Mac-related GIFs.
